Dumand and Amanda: High Energy Neutrino Astrophysics
نویسنده
چکیده
The eld of high energy neutrino astrophysics is entering an exciting new phase as two, new, large-scale observatories prepare to come on line. Both DUMAND (Deep Underwater Muon and Neutrino Detector) and AMANDA (Antarctic Muon and Neutrino Detector) had major deployment e orts in December 1993{January 1994. Results were mixed, with both projects making substantial progress, but encountering setbacks that delayed full-scale operation. The achievements, status, and plans (as of October 1994) of these two projects will be discussed. Supported by DOE Grant DE-FG06-91ER40614.

The first optical modules of the Baikal high energy neutrino telescope have recently been deployed. Commissioning of the AMANDA, DUMAND and NESTOR detectors will follow soon. Before discussing the detectors we review the arguments that pinpoint 0.1 km as the natural scale of a neutrino telescope. Though present detectors do not quite reach this goal, their techniques, if successful, can be expl...
متن کاملHigh Energy Neutrino Astronomy: Towards Kilometer-Scale Detectors
Of all high-energy particles, only neutrinos can directly convey astronomical information from the edge of the universe—and from deep inside the most cataclysmic high-energy processes. Copiously produced in high-energy collisions, travelling at the velocity of light, and not deflected by magnetic fields, neutrinos meet the basic requirements for astronomy. Their unique advantage arises from a f...
متن کاملHigh-energy neutrinos in the context of multimessenger astrophysics
The field of astroparticle physics is currently developing rapidly, since new experiments challenge our understanding of the investigated processes. Three messengers can be used to extract information on the properties of astrophysical sources: photons, charged Cosmic Rays and neutrinos. This review focuses on high-energy neutrinos (Eν > 100 GeV) with the main topics as follows. • The productio...
متن کاملNeutrino Astrophysics in the cold: Amanda, Baikal and IceCube
This talk reviews status and results from the two presently operating underwater/ice neutrino telescopes, NT-200 in Lake Baikal and AMANDA-II at the South Pole. It also gives a description of the design and the expected performance of IceCube, the next-generation neutrino telescope at South Pole.

The IceCube Observatory is a km neutrino telescope currently under construction at the geographic South Pole. It will comprise 4800 optical sensors deployed on 80 vertical strings between 1450 and 2450 meters under the ice surface. Currently IceCube is operational and recording data with 40 strings (i.e. 2400 optical sensors). The IceCube Observatory will collect an unprecedented number of high...
